Several ravines across the island

Canyoning on Madeira, and the cancellation that is good news

The short answer

Canyoning on Madeira means guided descents of steep watercourses, combining abseiling, scrambling and jumps through laurel-lined ravines. The tourism board names the official spots and requires licensed operators, who supply the equipment and the guides. It publishes no prices for any of it.

The facts

Where it happens

The tourism board names Ribeiro Bonito, Ribeiro Frio, Ribeira das Cales, Ribeira da Água Negra, Ribeira do Lajeado, Ribeira da Hortelã, Ribeira Funda and Ribeira do Vimieiro among the official spots.

All of them are steep, enclosed watercourses cut through laurel forest, and all of them are reached with a licensed operator supplying equipment and guides.

The water is the risk

Rain falling on Paúl da Serra or the central massif does not stay there. It arrives in these ravines, and it arrives quickly.

That is why operators cancel on upstream weather rather than on what the sky looks like at the meeting point, and why an operator who cancels has read the situation correctly.

No price, deliberately

The tourism board lists the activity and the licensed operators but publishes no prices. Each operator sets its own.

No figure appears here for that reason. A price copied from a booking site is not a sourced price.

What is not perfect about it

Heavy rain anywhere upstream on the plateau raises water levels fast, and operators cancel on that basis. A cancelled descent is a sign of a competent operator, not a wasted day, and these ravines are never a place to go independently.

Questions people actually ask

How much is canyoning in Madeira?

The tourism board publishes no price. It is set by each licensed operator, so no figure is stated here.

Can you go canyoning without a guide?

These ravines are not a place to enter independently. Licensed operators supply the equipment, the guides and the judgement about water levels.

Why do operators cancel canyoning trips?

Heavy rain upstream on the plateau raises water levels in the ravine fast. Cancelling on that basis is the operator getting it right.
