What is actually in the town

Centro de Saúde de Machico, on Rua da Ribeira, opens on weekdays and runs a Serviço de Atendimento Urgente twenty-four hours a day, every day. It is one of 9 of 47*, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres with an urgência at all. The region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is still in Funchal.

Shopping is better here than in most towns outside the capital: Pingo Doce Super Machico on Rua da Estacada, plus two Continente Modelo stores. Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. Schooling runs from a primary with pre-school to Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico.

The trunk bus is route 701 between Funchal and Machico, with variants running via the airport and via Gaula, alongside several local services and the Caniçal route passing through. All Madeiran route numbers changed to a three-digit scheme on 9 March 2026, and some old numbers now belong to entirely different routes, so these are the numbers as checked in 2026.

That station sits on an exposed shelf above the coast, so its wind figure overstates what a sheltered spot in the valley floor gets, and its rainfall figure is the best available proxy rather than a measurement of the town. The valley is dry and gets windier towards its mouth.
