Santa Cruz: the airport town, and the wind that comes with it

What is actually in the town

Centro de Saúde de Santa Cruz, on Rua do Bom Jesus, opens on weekdays with a Saturday morning nursing service. It has no urgência. The nearest twenty-four-hour urgent care is at Machico, and the region's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal.

Neither national chain lists a supermarket at a Santa Cruz town address. The Pingo Doce filed under this concelho — Super Cancela — is sited at Garajau, which is in Caniço. That is an absence from two chains' locators rather than proof that no shop exists: Madeira has a great many unbranded minimercados that no national locator lists, and the research behind this page could not check them.

State schooling runs from a primary with pre-school and creche on Avenida 2 de Agosto 1996 through to Escola Básica e Secundária de Santa Cruz. Buses are the Camacha, Gaula, Santo da Serra and Boqueirão services, with a Santa Cruz variant of the Funchal–Machico trunk route. Every route number on the island changed to three digits on 9 March 2026, so any list published before that date is stale.

The airport is the town

Madeira Airport is inside this municipality, operated by ANA. It runs roughly hourly and does not run on 25 December.

The weather: sunnier than Funchal, and much windier

The wind is the trade-off. The runway sits on an exposed shelf above the coast, which is why the figure is what it is, and a terrace here is a different object from a terrace in a sheltered ravine.

Who lives here

On an island where that number falls below half in two municipalities, it is a real and unglamorous advantage.

Which coast is it on, actually

The sources disagree, and the disagreement is not resolved here. The municipality's own geography page places itself on the costa sul, the south coast. Visit Madeira files Santa Cruz under the east coast. Geographically the municipality spans the south-east corner, so both descriptions are defensible and neither is wrong enough to correct.

It matters more than it sounds, because the two labels imply different weather expectations. The measurements above are the better guide: dry, sunny and windy.
