Move to Madeira
Settle the school before the town, because the commutes are ridge crossings

The short answer
Compulsory education on Madeira is delivered through the regional education system administered by the Secretaria Regional de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia, which follows the national curriculum under regional administration. Enrolment of a resident child in the state system is free. Private and international options exist and are concentrated in and around Funchal. No tuition figures are published on this page.
On an island where the road between two villages goes over a ridge or through it, the school fixes the search area before the house does. A family that picks the town first and the school second usually discovers the order was wrong on the first wet Monday morning.
This page sets out what is documented about schooling here, and is explicit about what is not. There are no fees on it, and the reason is in the fourth section.
The state system, and who administers it
Compulsory education in Madeira is delivered through the regional education system administered by the Secretaria Regional de Educação of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It follows the national curriculum under regional administration. Enrolment of a resident child in the state system is free.
That pattern, national substance, regional administration, repeats across this site. It is the same shape as health, where the service is SESARAM and the register behind it is national. A guide that describes mainland school administration is describing the right curriculum through the wrong department.
Private and international options, and where they are
Private and international school options exist on the island, and they are concentrated in and around Funchal.
That single sentence carries more weight for a property search than anything else on this page. If the answer to the school question is an international one, the search area collapses onto the south coast around the city, and it collapses before a single listing has been opened.
Schooling as a condition of residence, for some households
For family members admitted through family reunification, schooling is not only a domestic decision. Under art. 101.º of Lei n.º 23/2007, in the wording given by Lei n.º 61/2025, family members must attend Portuguese language training and training on Portuguese constitutional principles and values, and minors must attend compulsory schooling. Renewal of the permit depends on proving compliance.
This is one of the few school-related rules on this page that was read from a primary text rather than reported. It applies to a specific route into residence, not to every household, and it is set out further in the visa routes and what each one actually requires.
Why this page publishes no fees
No school-published fee schedule was obtained for this guide. Third-party aggregator figures for Madeira school fees circulate widely and were excluded by design, because an aggregator is not the school and a fee is exactly the kind of number that moves without anyone announcing it.
What would have to be checked, school by school, before any cost statement belongs here: the school's own published fee schedule for the current year, whether the published figure includes registration, materials, meals and transport or excludes them, the curriculum actually offered, International Baccalaureate, British or Portuguese, the admission process and its timing, and which year groups are open at all in the year a family intends to arrive.
A number without those five things attached is decoration. This site would rather be missing a figure than carry one that a reader plans around.
Why the school comes before the town
Distances on Madeira are not what a map suggests. The road between two points on opposite sides of a ridge is a tunnel, a climb or a long way round, and the school run is the one journey a household makes twice a day in every season, in the dark, in fog, whether or not anyone feels like it.
Choosing the school first turns a fuzzy question, which town? — into a bounded one: which places are inside a tolerable daily drive of this specific gate. That is a much easier problem, and it is why the town comparison is more useful read second than first. Anyone who has to make the same crossing for a hospital appointment as well should read it with both fixed points on the map.
What is deliberately absent
Named schools, their curricula and their admission processes were not researched at source for this page, so none are named. Neither is any figure for fees, class sizes or places available.
Everything above is either sourced or labelled as unsourced. A page about schools with no school names on it is an unusual thing to publish, and it is the honest state of the research behind it today.
Questions people actually ask
Is state school free for a foreign resident child in Madeira?
Enrolment of a resident child in the state system is free. The system is administered by the Secretaria Regional de Educação of the Autonomous Region and follows the national curriculum.
Is the curriculum in Madeira the same as mainland Portugal?
The curriculum is the national one. What is regional is the administration — the schools sit under the Secretaria Regional de Educação rather than a mainland structure, in the same way that health runs through SESARAM.
How much does an international school in Madeira cost?
This page publishes no figure. No school-published fee schedule was obtained, and third-party aggregator figures were excluded by design. The schedule to check is the school's own, for the current year, and it matters whether the published figure includes registration, materials, meals and transport.
Are there international schools outside Funchal?
The private and international options on the island are concentrated in and around Funchal. This guide does not name individual schools, because the schools and their curricula were not researched at source for it.
