What is actually in the town

Centro de Saúde de Câmara de Lobos, on Avenida da Nova Cidade, opens on weekdays and runs a Serviço de Atendimento Urgente twenty-four hours a day, every day. That places it in the small group of 9 of 47*, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres with an urgência at all — though the region's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is still in Funchal, and how SESARAM works is worth reading before assuming otherwise.

Both national chains are present: Pingo Doce Super Câmara de Lobos and Continente Modelo on Rua Frei Pedro da Guarda. Lidl is not, here or anywhere in the archipelago. State schooling runs to lower secondary, at a primary with pre-school on Rua Dr. Vasco dos Reis and the Escola Básica dos 2.º e 3.º ciclos da Torre.

Buses are good, because the town sits on the trunk. The Rodoeste routes west out of Funchal all pass through — the São Vicente, Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz, Ponta do Pargo and Ribeira Brava services — plus two local circuits. Every route number in Madeira was changed to a three-digit scheme on 9 March 2026, and some old numbers now belong to a different route on the other side of the island, so the numbers here are the ones checked in 2026 and nothing earlier should be trusted.

The weather, measured up the hill

The reading matters because it is the wrong reading for the harbour. A station a few hundred metres up the slope is not measuring the seafront, and on this island that difference is measured in degrees, not decimals.

Cabo Girão, and what is not verified about it

Cabo Girão sits in this municipality, and its glass-floored skywalk was built in 2012 as part of works that also added road and pedestrian access. Visit Madeira, the regional tourism board, gives the height as 580 m*, source: Visit Madeira, read August 26, 2026 and describes it as the highest promontory in Europe. The official protected-area site states neither a height nor a superlative, and a different height circulates elsewhere.

The phrase “highest cliff skywalk in Europe” circulates for Cabo Girão. It was not found in any official source, and it is not used here. The claim the tourism board actually makes is about the promontory, not the walkway.
